After seeing somebody with their face painted to mimic a calavera de azĂșcar* while I was getting dinner and a few people with feather headdresses at my busstop, I was feeling pretty fucking pissed at some of Portland’s grown-up Halloween crowd. This video helped me feel considerably better. I’ve never seen videos by Chescaleigh before, but if this is representative, the others are probably pretty rad.
There was an ableist joke at the end of the video, but Chescaleigh recognized and removed it, rocking even harder than I thought before; I’ll definitely be checking out more of these vids.
*A nearby American Apparel shop had a window display of several mannequins with all their faces painted similarly (“sugar skulls” is the popular term among non-Spanish-speaking people, I think), and what looked like kindergarten construction paper snowflake interpretations of papel picado. American Apparel: objectifying, classist ads and racist, appropriative displays, but still claiming they’re legit because they’re sweatshop-free. Fuck that. Though American labor standards are not spectacular, it is cool that American Apparel adheres to those rather than laxer ones in countries it’s cheaper to produce in, but it seems their corporate culture must promote the shit out of being a total fucking asshole.
